Delhi Buses Is One of the Cheapest Modes of Transport

The local bus service in Delhi was taken over by the Ministry of transport, which is directly under its control. This event took place in the year 1948. A Road Transport Authority was constituted under the Road Transport Corporation Act, 1950. Thereafter, the transport service in Delhi was termed as DTC. Delhi buses are the most common mode of transport in the capital.

The Working Group of Planning Commission stated that Delhi Transport had not been functioning efficiently. This was also associated with the loss of huge amounts of money. Thereafter, Govt. of India took over the assets and liabilities from the erstwhile Delhi Transport Undertaking. DTC was finally set up in 1970.

Delhi Transport Corporation laid few aims and objectives. Providing an economical and coordinated system in all the areas of Delhi was one of the major objectives of Delhi Transport Corporation. DTC has always been focused to achieve high level of operational efficiency. It has developed around three thousand buses in the NCR region. Delhi buses cover numerous routes all over the NCR region. The bus fare is very reasonable. Thus, each and every person can afford to travel by Delhi buses.

Blue line buses are very common. Nowadays, low floor buses are seen on the roads of Delhi. These are green colored CNG buses. Air conditioned buses are recently introduced in Delhi. Air conditioned buses of Delhi Transport Corporation are red in color. Journey by Delhi buses is very comfortable. The service is fast and regular.

Delhi Transport Corporation also provides the facility of Tours, which starts everyday except on Monday. The bus fare for adult is Rs. 200 and Rs. 100 for children. Bus service is undoubtedly the best transport service in Delhi.

Using the Public Transport in Delhi

Public Transport is the lifeline for the city, as more than half of the population of Delhi depend on it for commuting purposes. Delhi is synonymous is with long hours of traffic snarls and for many years now, the people of Delhi were completely reliant o road transport. However, with the dawn of the Metro age, Delhi has added a new dimension to its public transport service. The  Delhi Metro has easily been the best thing to come out in Delhi for a long time, and it seems people from all walks of life, be it poor or rich are benefiting from it. Delhi is definitely a commuter's nightmare and what comes as a saving grace is the establishment of good infrastructure, in terms of wide roads, good networking and newly built transport service like the Metro. There are many transport options for a Delhiite, ranging from the very cheap trains and buses to very expensive taxis.

Bus Transport

One of the cheapest ways of travelling in Delhi, is using the bus service, most of the buses plying on Delhi road are owned by the Delhi Transport Service (DTC Bus Route). However, these buses have been notorious for causing many deaths due to negligent driving. Even though Delhi boasts of one of the largest bus transport systems in India, they always seem to be full. With the arrival of the new fully air-conditioned buses Delhiites can breathe a sigh of relief.

Trains

The local train service is one of the cheapest modes of transportation in Delhi. Both inter and intra state trains ply from the many stations in Delhi. Some of the major railway stations in the capital are New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Old Delhi, Okhla, Pragati Maidan, Shakur, Basti Shahdara, and Tilak Bridge.

Taxis

Taxi service in Delhi is definitely the most expensive form of transport. The 'taxi wallahs' as they are called charge commuters exorbitant amount of money even when travelling small distances. This is the selfsame reason why, Delhiites shun from using the taxi service unless they are in dire straits. Taxis are mainly used by commuters either going to the airport or the railway station.

Auto Rickshaws

Auto Rickshaws come in between bus transportation and taxi, they are not as cheap as the buses nor are they as expensive as taxis. These three wheelers or 'tuk tuks' as they are referred to by the foreign tourists are a crucial mode of travelling for Delhiites. However, one has to be very careful with these auto drivers as they are known for their cheating ways. Make sure you pay by the metre when travelling, or decide on a price before you sit in it.

Metro

The arrival of the Delhi Metro has brought a smile to each and every Delhiite who is out there. Almost reaching its full capability and officially opened in 2002, it has been touted as Asia's best rapid transit system. It is fast, efficient, fairly priced and environmentally friendly. Delhiites are getting much needed respite, from the weather as well as the traffic snarls of the city. One can clearly see the effect that the metro route is already causing to the Delhi life, there are lesser number of vehicles on the road, plus pollution levels have also gone down.
